Everyone has that friend who studied abroad in Europe and made it their whole personality when they came back. In our office, when the team wants to see one of my patterns redone in a more sophisticated and elevated way, they say the pattern needs to go to Europe and come back. It has become such a funny shorthand that we all use, and all of our new hires have been totally confused by. I say all of this because Sunny Poppies was one of the most successful trips to Europe we've ever had. It started as Sunflower Fields, but I think we all knew that a sunflower pattern had so much more potential than that pattern had to offer. I set out to create a more elevated version and it led to Sunny Poppies. This pattern actually has one of the most unexpected and sweet origin stories of all of my designs. I finished this print on a work trip to Denver and during my flight, I was seated next to a sweet little boy. He seemed fascinated watching me draw Sunny Poppies on my iPad, so toward the end of the flight, I gave him my iPad and showed him how to draw on it. He whipped up a quick little masterpiece, which he said included flowers because I was drawing flowers. When he was done, he signed his name, and then told me he signed my name too, since I helped him draw it. I finished Sunny Poppies the next day, and I can’t look at it without thinking of Asher. Since then, it has become a best-seller loved by sunflower fans and poppy stans (looking at you, Californians) alike, so thank goodness we sent her Europe!!
